Travel and see the world whenever you get a chance

You will gain a different perspective on life, on people, and life long memories when you travel.  We lived in Germany many years ago and had a wonderful time exploring all over Europe. I still have fond memories of all the trips, both the good and the bad. I saw some of the best places like Bavaria, Burgundy, Tuscany, and the Alps.

We went all over Europe while living there

We spent time visiting many of the major capitals across Europe like London, Paris, Vienna, and Berlin. I am a big Rick Steves fan who is famous for seeing Europe through the back-door. Hidden gems that not many Americans know about like Colmar, Bruges, Dresden, and Wurzburg.

Make sure to learn about the history

Europe is full of historical sites. It has a colorful past worth understanding. Visit places like Normandy and battlefields across Europe if you want to learn more about the two world wars. You can learn about ancient culture in Greece and Italy. Make sure you also spend time pondering areas that are grim reminders of humanity’s dark side like Nazi sites in Germany to include concentration camps such as Dachau. Even Bosnia the most recent war in Europe where I deployed to multiple times is worth seeing.

My dream is to travel to Europe every summer

It may sound crazy, but I want to take a trip to Europe every summer from now until forever. It is my favorite place in the world to visit, so I plan on spending my summer vacations there. Hopefully, you will be able to join me for these adventures. So much still to see and do.

I’m not expecting to grow flowers in a desert
But I can live and breathe and see the sun in wintertime
In a big country, dreams stay with you
Like a lover’s voice fires the mountainside, Stay alive

The Song in a Big Country, by the band Big Country
One of my favorite bands from the 1980s.

I am Doug Keating and this is my letter to sons.

Travel is an obsession for me.

    1. Indeed – the Crossing was an incredible album. I remember listening to it while playing ping pong in your basement. Good times and fond memories.
