Last month Gavin and I went to Europe. We spent a few days in Stuttgart, the capital of Baden Wurttemberg. Here are five reasons I love visiting the city of Stuttgart.

Reason #1 – old city center

Stuttgart’s old city center is definitely worth exploring. Start in Schlosspark which is surrounded by all kinds of interesting things to see. The city pedestrian zone is large, and it is easy to walk around the old city center. Stuttgart contains many museums, several places to shop, and plenty of fine cafes, pubs, and restaurants.

Reason #2 – car museums

Stuttgart is home to two car museums – Mercedes Benz and Porsche. We went to the Porsche one. If you are a car person, then you definitely need to visit one, or both. The Porsche museum includes some of their most beautiful cars and the history of the brand. Even if you are not into cars – go visit one of these museums.

The Porsche museum includes several race cars.

Reason #3 – architecture

Stuttgart is an interesting contrast between old and new architecture. The city was heavily bombed during WWII. Its citizens decided to rebuild in both new and old styles in different sections. As you walk around you will notice this contrast. I find the architecture fascinating here.

Old on the left, new on the right.

Reason #4 – Day trips

There are a lot of fun places to see near Stuttgart. You have everything from world-class castles to charming cities. A few recommendations – Hohenzollern Castle, Lichtenstein Castle, and Sigmaringen Castle are excellent. The university city of Tubingen is worth a day trip. Home base in Stuttgart, rent a car and explore the area on day trips.

Lichenstein Castle may be my new favorite in Germany.

Reason #5 – green spaces

Like many German cities, Stuttgart contains several public parks that you can visit. The one near Schlossplatz is easy to get to and reminds me of the National Mall in Washington DC. It is not as big as Central Park, but the green spaces in Stuttgart are impressive. Hang out there, enjoy a beer, and spend an afternoon relaxing.

Even the main square includes green space.

Three quick questions about Stuttgart

  1. What is my favorite site – altes schloss. The old castle includes a good history museum.
  2. What is my favorite place to visit – city library. Funky new architecture.
  3. What is my favorite pub – Carls brauhaus. Excellent beer and schweinhaxen.
