Last summer we were able to vacation in Bavaria to include a visit to one of my favorite hidden gems in Europe, Wurzburg Germany. Here are five reasons I love visiting there.

The #1 reason I love visiting Wurzburg Germany- my son

Gavin, my older son, was born here. When I was in the Army we were stationed near Wurzburg. Gavin was born in the military hospital in this city. The hospital is no longer there, but this city has a special place in my heart because my older son was born here.

Gavin was a cute kid.

Reason #2 – sites

Wurzburg is not that big a city. However, it contains some world-class sites. It has a castle up on the hill overlooking the city, an impressive Bishop’s palace, and a historic bridge. The old part of the city is quite walkable. The good news is that there is plenty to see and do in Wurzburg.

Reason #3 – wine

Some of you thought that beer would show up on this list. Yes – Wurzburg is the home of several great breweries serving outstanding selections at the local beer gardens. But, this city is better known for the wine. The area is full of vineyards and wonderful wine villages. I used to live in one nearby. They make excellent white wines that come in specially shaped bottles called bocksbeutal. If you are in this area be sure to sample the wine.

The white wine in this region is excellent.

Reason #4 – history

Wurzburg has been an important city in Germany for centuries. It was a Bishop’s city in the Catholic church. Because of that designation, it contains a beautiful Bishop’s palace. The city was also bombed to the ground in WWII. They decided after the war to rebuild it in the traditional style. When you visit the museums and walk around the city you learn about all this history which I find fascinating.

The Bishop’s palace is a must-see site.

Reason #5 – location

Wurzburg is about an hour and a half away from Frankfurt. If you are flying in or out of Frankfurt airport I recommend adding Wurzburg to your itinerary. It is not far away from many other great German cities like Nuremberg, Rothenburg, Bamberg, Stuttgart, and Heidelburg. It is a great place to launch your Bavarian adventure.

Wurzburg sits at the intersection of multiple Autobahns.

Three quick questions about visiting Wurzburg
